There are three kinds of graduate advisors. Understanding which kind best fits your learning style is an important first step.
What Kind of Advisor Am I?
Directive
Tells you exactly what to do and what not to do throughout your research life.
Hands-Off
Does not tell you anything during your research period in school.
Coach
Teaches you how to do research. You find your own topic; I guide and answer your questions.
If you want to learn how to do research and are willing to be very active, you are most welcome to come and talk with me.

Before You Come to Meet Me
You are most welcome to meet me at my office (工程一館 EA-517). Please satisfy the following conditions before our meeting:
- Read my curriculum vitae — take note of the research interests
- Browse through my publications — at least read the titles of journal papers
- Take a look at the research topics we are currently working on
- Prepare a brief oral plan (5 minutes) of your intended future research
- Have a good command of English — at least good comprehension of technical writings
What Kind of Students Are We Looking For?
- Self-motivated and active — this is non-negotiable
- Looking for an academic career, ideally with a PhD pursuit after Masters
- Deep interest in system design and verification (both theory and practice)
- Basic understanding of computer architecture, operating systems, and programming
- Proficient in English — reading papers, writing thesis in English, oral presentations
- Willing to participate in lab administration for the welfare of the whole team
Graduation Requirements
Master students must have at least one conference paper accepted or published before graduation. Your thesis must be written in English and be at least 50 pages in length.
PhD students must satisfy all department graduation requirements. The final decision rests on whether I believe you are ready to carry the title of "Doctor" — a high bar that reflects the depth and independence of your research.
All theses and dissertations must be written in LaTeX/BibTeX, and source files must be submitted on a CD/DVD along with all program source codes and documentation.
Monthly Stipend
Each and every lab member receives a uniform monthly stipend, determined by the total project budget divided by the current number of students. In return, all members are expected to contribute to project research groups within the lab.
