Voice over IP (VOIP)

Abstract

Introduction: Telephone is a very common and necessary device in our daily life. As the improvement of the Internet technology, we can transmit our voice via Internet. A VOIP system is to perform telephone functionality but transit the voices through the Internet. We can use the VOIP system just as a normal telephone to communicate with others.

Implementation:

HW part: the telephone device: to send and receive a call.
SW part:
1. transform between voices and TCP/IP packets.
2. a interface to send and receive voice packets.

In this case, the software part will play the important role. It must add some timing controls to guarantee the quality.

Conclusion: There are many advantages of VoIP over the traditional telephone system. First, it’s cheaper for the customer. Second, the quality of communication is better especially in long-distance telephone call. Third, cost of the whole system for the ISP is also not too much.
